Tutorial to Recover Video and Photos Files on Mac
Photos (.jpg/.jpeg, and .png), music (.mp3), videos (.mov), and text files (.doc, .docx, .txt, .xls, and .ppt) can sometimes be lost, formatted, damaged, or deleted. Thankfully, there is a Mac files recovery process that can undo these actions to restore them.
There is a multitude of data recovery software available to restore files that have been deleted. A few such software uFlysoft Data Recovery for Mac. However, for the most part, these software are not able to repair corrupt or damaged files.
Most data recovery software have a sizeable price tag attached but thankfully, there are some that are free. Two very powerful and free data recovery software for Mac are uFlysoft and uMacsoft. The data recovery process is basically the same for all data recovery software. Let us review the steps:
1. Download the software or insert the bootable CD: If downloading the software, it is best to do so onto a portable storage device such as a flash drive.
2. Select the scan mode: There is usually a quick scan and other levels of deep scan. A deep scan can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete.
3. Restore the file(s): More than likely, the original filename will be lost. Some data recovery software will try to use certain keywords from within the file to rename it to make your search easier.
4. Save the recovered file(s) onto an external storage device: This is done to prevent the recovered files from overwriting the very file(s) that you had deleted.
It is important to note that the chances of recovering a deleted file will greatly depend on whether or not the data has been overwritten. For this reason, when a file has been deleted, the drive or external device on which it was saved should no longer be used. Stop using it immediately and then begin the data recovery process.
The very first place to search for files that were deleted from the hard drive is the Trash Can. However, if a file was deleted from an external storage device such as a flash drive, it is unlikely that it will show up in the Trash Can. Do one of these things to restore the file:
1. Right click on the file in the Trash Can and select Restore from the menu.
2. Press COMMAND-Z to restore the last item sent to the Trash Can.
3. Select the file in question and drag it to the desktop or whatever location you desire.
Another means of undeleting Mac files is utilizing Mac’s Time Machine. Since the Time Machine backs-up data hourly, daily, and weekly, using the timeline feature will take you to whatever date and time that corresponds to when the file was deleted. Simply press the space bar to preview the file and then press the Restore button to restore the file.
